Department of Chemistry

About the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was started in 2020 with a BSc programme consisting of a single faculty member as it was newly introduced.

The thrust areas of BSc programme in Chemistry are:

  • Analytical Chemistry, which is concerned with providing qualitative and quantitative information about the chemical and structural composition of matter.
  • Biological Chemistry, which focuses on the structure, reactivity and reaction mechanisms of molecules found in biological systems.
  • Environmental Chemistry, which includes natural substances and processes, as well as pollution problems that have a chemical basis.

  • Inorganic Chemistry, a very broad area examining the structure, reactivity and properties of all the elements.
  • Organic Chemistry, the study of organic molecules, including pharmaceuticals, natural products and organometallics, with a focus upon reactivity, synthesis, structure, function, mechanism and catalysis.
  • Physical Chemistry, which establishes and develops the principles that are used to explain and interpret the observations made in the other branches of chemistry.
  • Polymer and Materials Chemistry, which is the study of new polymeric and solid-state materials with interesting and potentially useful properties.

Vision

To prepare students for a diverse and changing world. Our goal is to impart quality education towards the holistic development of students and we strive to contribute to a chemically literate society through teaching (with classrooms, labs), scholarship and service. Our vision is to emerge as a ‘Centre of Excellence for Higher Studies’ in the specialization of chemistry.

Mission

The Department of Chemistry provides rigorous preparation for citizens whose career paths require expertise in chemistry. Our mission is to awaken the young minds and discover their talents both in theory and in practical chemistry. It also aims at the advancement of intellectual, technological, cultural and economic condition of the State, region and Nation through the discovery and development of knowledge in the field of Chemistry. In support of our mission, the department faculty members strive to foster multi-disciplinary curriculum development to provide students with a breadth of course options in Polymer Science, Food Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science and Chemical education. The department is committed to communicate the excitement of chemistry to the public at large. To help us accomplish these goals, we remain dedicated to a core set of values: excellence in teaching, respect for all members of the department, diversity in our students, faculty and staff; and service to the citizens of the country.
